Summer Fun and Fourth of July

As usual in the Spindler household, things are busy! We kicked off our summer with a trip to James's 15th college reunion, and Nani and Nana watched the kids for the long weekend. It was our first weekend away sans kids -- in retrospect, not my first choice of relaxing getaway, but we did have a nice night in New York with all three of James's former roommates, AND I had a fabulous time (which really should go without saying) with dearest Katie, who was awesomely playing role of chief party instigator, as I tried to summon the ghost of glorious party-going Mina somewhere hidden within me. Then Aunt Julie came for several weeks to Texas, which was terrific (we went to Wimberly at least three timse!), and we headed to Salt Lake City for a wonderful few days with the Peach-Leungs (highlights included a trip to the world's largest manmade hole and copper mine, a visit to the salt marshes, a hike in the mountains, and an incredible adult dinner at a very unique restaurant called Forage) and a few days in Chicago with James's family. When we returned, Louis was off to "Tiger Ground Art" camp (Wilder's name) with Kyle, Wilder, and Miles. As you can see, they had a blast. Every day I picked them up they were naked and covered in paint.

Happy Fourth of July! The kids and I celebrated by decorating their bikes and making outfits, and then we all participated in the annual Barton Hills Fourth of July parade, ending up at the school for snowcones, cookies, and watermelon. It was really very charming -- our first parade in our own neighborhood (we were in Dallas last year, and hadn't moved in the year before).

Below are both of the kids riding their bikes! Louis has been DYING to ride the Scoot bike pretty much since we started riding to school in September, but was only recently tall enough for it. He's really good! And this is Rosemary's SECOND time riding all by herself. As we walked down the parade (all the way down at Barton Hills Market, at least a mile away) she wouldn't let me let go of her neck, but then when she saw all the kids riding their bikes, she just went up and did it! Uphill! For almost a mile!
